"Africa for the Connoisseur"
(Southern and East Africa Safari) - 19 Days
|
DAY ONE Upon arrival at OR Tambo International, you will be met by an Arrive in Africa representative to hand over your travel documents and provide a transfer to the Federal Air Hanger for your connecting scheduled air charter to Arathusa Safari Lodge, for 3 nights accommodation. On arrival at the lodge, please proceed with check in formalities, where you will be shown to your room. “Arathusa” is derived from the Northern Sotho Word “Reathusa”, which means “to help one another”. Arathusa Safari Lodge is located within the northern sector of the coveted Sabi Sand Reserve, adjacent to the Kruger National Park. This region has gained favour due to its lengthy history within the South African tourism industry, its incredible concentrations of wildlife, and the high quality private safaris on offer. The lodge flanks the bank of a large lake (approximately 250m x 150m). Each of luxury chalets has a 180- degree view of the water. Guests are able to view and enjoy a variety of wildlife (including the big five – lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, and elephant) from their private verandas. There are usually between 5 and 20 hippos “right on the doorstep” providing 24 hour entertainment. |

Traversing during game drives, however, takes place across an
area of approximately 4000 hectares (due to reciprocal agreements with
neighbouring landowners). The landscape is rich and varied. Open savannahs,
riverine thickets, river beds and lush bush vegetation ensure interesting
sights around each corner. The perennial Manyeleti River meanders its way
through the property. The camp is an intimate one, completely open-plan and
designed to harmoniously blend with the adjacent lake and African bush. Wood
and thatch, air and water – an extension of the natural environment.
The main living area is intended for comfort. Whether quietly reflecting on the view; reading a good book; enjoying compatible banter with friends or fellow safari go-ers - the warmth and charm of the camp environment is the foundation of the Arathusa safari experience. An infinity swimming pool overlooks the waterhole and is the perfect spot for wildlife viewing on a smoldering African summer’s afternoon. A traditional open-air boma (brick & grass enclosed dining area) presents guests with a novel way of appreciating an enjoyable meal under the stars to the sounds of the African wild. A curio shop showcases a good selection of African artefacts, clothing and basic necessities. No more than 10 guests are accommodated at Arathusa Safari Lodge. 5 thatched luxury suites each with a king-sized four-poster bed, bathroom en-suite (with bath and separate indoor and outdoor showers), and a secluded veranda for optimum enjoyment of the surrounding wilds |

A network of pathways lead over tiny clear water streams to charismatic semi-detached thatch bungalows, each with verandas and plenty of nets. Recently taken over by the Serena chain, standards have certainly improved and now the the wide-windowed dining room (whcih once felt rather neglected) is stunning and the food is of the typical good Serena standard. All rooms have private balconies commanding views to Kilimanjaro on one side and Mount Meru on the other with Lake Duluti infront; the setting is fabulous

The lavishly tented dining area at Kirawira is laid out across dark polished teak floorboards covered with rich woven rugs and surrounded by fine writing desks and 1920s safari memorabilia. Guests enjoy a la carte meals served on a fine array of china and silver. Its hilltop position gives fabulous views across mile upon mile of the Serengeti bush all around. The Serena connection is only really apparent at the swimming pool, for which they excel in providing individual and inviting designs, with water features and private enclaves with phenomenal views that really make the most of the surroundings. Kirawira has captured a nostalgic, romantic atmosphere, most enjoyable as the sun sets and its many lamps twinkle to life in the African night. As if in a land before time, Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is built into the rim of a Dormant and collapsed volcano (known as a caldera), the plant and ivy-covered native stone blending masterfully with its surroundings. Close by lies the Olduvai Gorge, the"birthplace of man". Today the volcano and surrounding landscape are part of a vast conservation area inhabited by the Masai tribe, as well as an extraordinary variety of big game and birdlife. Most guest rooms have private terraces with views of the crater floor where countless animals make their home. At Ngorongoro Serena Lodge visitors co-exist in perfect harmony with the natural environment and the wildlife that inhabits it.

DAY
FIFTEEN After breakfast you will descend into the crater floor for a full day crater tour and spend the day exploring this unique, spectacular and awe-inspiring natural amphitheatre in full. Using a four-wheel drive safari vehicle, descend into the Crater, to track and photograph the animals. This great caldera contains some of the finest black‑maned lion in Africa. Rhino can be seen with calves at heel. Eland and waterbuck appear not to notice the human visitors, enabling photographers to shoot at ease. Enjoy a picnic lunch with the hippos and birds! On the lake in the middle of the Crater you may see thousands of flamingos fluttering and shimmering like a pink heat haze. No area known can offer a natural scenic grandeur with six mountain peaks of 9,800 feet constantly in sight. Ngorongoro was an active volcano some four million years ago, whose cone collapsed leaving a crater, or caldera, 2,000 feet deep, ten miles across, and 337 square miles in area. Why and how animals found it their permanent sanctuary remains the 8th wonder of the world! Dinner can be enjoyed at the lodge

SIXTEEN Enjoy breakfast at the lodge. After check-out formalities, you will be met by an Arrive in Africa representative who will transfer you to Manyara Aistrip for your connecting scheduled Regional Air flight departing at 12:00 PM to Kilimnjaro arriving at 12:20 PM. Upon arrival at Wilson Airport, you will be met and assisted onto your connecting Air Kenya flight to Maasai Mara National Reserve. On arrival at the Airstrip, you will be transferred by road to Little Governors Camp. Little Governors’ Camp is situated at the heart of one of the most game ric h areas of the Masai Mara National Reserve. It is set on the Musiara Marshlands, which are watered by the Mara River, the area having traditionally been reserved for Kenya’s colonial Governors. The area surrounding Little Governors’ Camp is home to substantial herds of elephants, hippos and buffalos whilst also providing home for the herds of migrating zebra and wildebeest. The nearby plains are the classical image of savannah Africa, dotted with acacia trees and fringed by the inspiring Siria escarpment. Hardly surprising that Little Governors’ was the setting for the filming of Out of Africa. Little Governors’ Camp consists of 17 tents spread around the shores of the Musiara waterhole, which acts as the focal point for the site. From the shade of your tent veranda you can relax and enjoy the views as giraffe, elephant, zebra and warthog pass by. During the evening hippos and elephants graze in the grounds of the camp making the Masai askari (warden) guiding you back to the tent especially comforting. |
![]() |
|
The gas-lit tents are particularly comfortable and spacious with the shower room being especially well-equipped. Candlelit evening meals are of a high standard from a buffet bar and generally are eaten alfresco with views of the nearby Siara escarpment. Little Governors’ is one of the few camps within the Masai Mara that provide three game drives every day and being a stones throw away from the Mara River ensures that the action during the migration season (July-October) is a short game drive away. The start of your game drive is an adventure in itself, walking beneath the canopy of indigenous forest trees, two fairly steep sets of steps and a river crossing of your own, by hand-pulled ferry. Not only are grazing animals particularly common in this area but big cat sightings are also particularly prevalent – it’s not for nothing that the BBC’s Big Cat Diary is filmed here. The bushlands around Rhino Ridge are also good areas for spotting one of the Masai Mara’s 20 or so black rhinos. In addition Little Governors’ Camp can provide alternative means of wildlife viewing - by foot outside the National Park or with a complementary bird walk around the camp to admire the 82 species of bird. Sunrise balloon safaris also begin from the camp offering a spectacular way of witnessing the diversity present within the Mara. It is also possible to combine a stay at Little Governors with a relaxing break on the shores of Lake Victoria at Mfangano Island Camp, the 40 minute air transfer being available from the camp’s airstrip. Dinner can be enjoyed at the camp this evening
